KOSRAE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE
The State of Kosrae considers culture, nature, and society as valuable resources. Therefore, the Kosrae State Historic Preservation Office (KSHPO) operates as part of the Kosrae Island Resource Management Authority (KIRMA). Projects by and through KSHPO are reviewed by KIRMA’s Review Board.

KOSRAE STATE, FEDERATED STATES of MICRONESIA
Kosrae Island is one of four states in the country of the Federated States of Micronesia. In 1947, the United Nations placed specific Pacific Islands in trust under the administration of the United States of America, also known as the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (or simply, The Trust Period). Since then, the United States has actively promoted historic preservation here. In the early 1980s, the Trust Period evolved into the Compact of Free Association (CoFA) between the United States and three countries, the Republic of Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Since that time, our Kosrae Historic Preservation family, with assistance from the United States National Park Service (NPS), addresses the cultural and historic needs of Kosrae by identifying its staff, projects, and documents through five program areas:

• Survey and Inventory (archaeological and ethnographic)
  
• Kosrae Historic Properties and Sites Register
  
• Review and Compliance
  
• Development (Site Rehabilitation Projects)
